Abstract Obesity is a state of abnormal or excessive fat accumulation. in horses increases the risk developing variety health issues such as: insulin dysregulation (ID), reduced athleticism, colic, reproductive performance, laminitis, endotoxaemia, diabetes mellitus , hyperlipaemia, impaired thermoregulation, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction, and osteochondrosis. significant welfare issue that may go unreported unnoticed due to caregiver’s (owner) neglect. Weight gain occurs when horse’s energy consumption exceeds his her physical needs. best assessed via necropsy upon vivo assessment with deuterium oxide administration, although this not feasible clinical environment. In practice, obesity by: body condition scoring, cresty neck ultrasono graphic assessment, morphometric measurements, biochemical indicators blood. Dietary exercise programs are primary means controlling equine obesity. Pharmacologic assistance (levothyroxine sodium metformin hydrochloride), being secondary approach, be effective some cases.
